He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland in 2012. His group applies ideas from text indexing, statistics and parallel programming. He has released some of the most widely software tools (e.g. Bowtie, Bowtie 2) addressing key computational problems in genomics. His academic work has been cited over 100,000 times according to Google Scholar. He is the recipient of a Genome Biology award (2010), Sloan Research Fellowship (2014), a National Science Foundation CAREER award (2014) and the Benjamin Franklin award for contributions to open access (2016). More specifics about Dr. Langmead’s group’s research can be found on their website.
Alongside his research, Ben is an devoted educator. He has taught several different courses, including “Computational Genomics: Sequences”, “Sketching and Indexing for Sequences” and “Intermedaite Programming” in Johns Hopkins University classrooms since 2012. He was won teaching awards at the department and school levels. Dr. Langmead also teaches online, including his popular Algorithms for DNA Sequencing course on Coursera as part of the Genomic Data Science Specialization; this course has also won awards.
